For the seventh year in a row, the World of Little League® Museum has earned at least one ISHY Award for its unique content, bringing home three awards as part of this year’s honors, presented by the International Sports Heritage Association (ISHA).

“Storytelling around our history is such an important piece of bringing our museum to life, and we are honored to be able to once again be recognized by our peers with this honor,” said Adam Thompson, World of Little League Museum Director. “We hope these exhibits and video help share the story of our program in households around the world and inspire our guests who experience them in person to bring the values of Little League back home with them.”

This year’s awards were presented in the following categories:

Marketing Material – Audio/Video

This is the seventh year in a row that the World of Little League Museum took home the honor:

The ISHY Awards program was established to provide recognition for excellence in publications and exhibitions by all member sports museums, halls of fame, or sports heritage organizations, based upon a competition evaluated by a panel of ISHA Officers and organizational members. We split each category into three depending on their organizational budget for Small Organizations, Mid-Size Organizations, and Large Organizations.

The International Sports Heritage Association is a non-profit membership organization incorporated in 1971. The mission of ISHA is to educate, promote and support organizations and individuals engaged in the celebration of sports heritage. ISHA includes nearly 150 regular members from countries such as China, New Zealand, England, Switzerland, Singapore, Japan, Australia, Canada, and the United States. In addition, corporations and individuals participate in and contribute to the growth of ISHA as Associate Members. For more information about ISHA, visit SportsHeritage.org.

Professional hockey is once again making its mark in the Little League® history books with the addition of two stars – Meghan Duggan and Ray Ferraro – into the Little League Hall of Excellence, the highest honor the organization can bestow.

“Enshrinement into the Little League Hall of Excellence is the highest honor we can bestow on alumni of the Little League program. Ray Ferraro and Meghan Duggan both exemplify the values and purpose of the Little League program and are most deserving of this distinguished recognition,” said Stephen D. Keener, Little League President and CEO. “Little League is much more than a baseball and softball program, those sports are simply the vehicles through which young people, during their most impressionable years, can learn valuable life lessons that will serve them well beyond their playing days. Through those memorable childhood days on a Little League field, Ray and Meghan have utilized those lessons and serve as an inspiration to young people everywhere. We are very pleased that we can acknowledge them both with the Hall of Excellence enshrinement during the 2024 Little League Baseball World Series.”

With their enshrinement at the Little League Baseball® World Series this August, Ms. Duggan and Mr. Ferraro will be joining one of the original Little League Girls with Game, Maria Pepe, in the Hall of Excellence Class of 2024. Learn more about each of the two hockey stars below:

Meghan Duggan – Danvers (Mass.) American Little League

Meghan Duggan Hall of Excellence Enshrinement

Before an astonishing hockey career that saw three Olympic medals and seven World Championship gold medals for Team USA on the ice, Meghan Duggan could be found as a youngster playing Little League in her hometown of Danvers, Massachusetts. After hanging up her cleats, Ms. Duggan went on to play hockey for the University of Wisconsin and spent six seasons of professional hockey that included four years with the Boston Blades in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League, winning the Clarkson Cup in 2013 and 2015, and two in the National Women’s Hockey League.

After making her international debut with Team USA at the 2007 International Ice Hockey Federation Women’s World Championship, Ms. Duggan made her mark on the national team. Just three years later, she was selected to the 2010 U.S. Olympic team, finishing with four goals to capture a silver medal, and was later named the captain for the 2014 and 2018 Olympic games. In 2017, she stood up for the women in her sport, boycotting the World Championships to help bring equable support and conditions for females in the game.

On October 13, 2020, Ms. Duggan officially retired as a player, but less than a year later joined the New Jersey Devils as the manager of player development, a new role within the franchise. Today, Ms. Duggan serves as the Director of Player Development for the organization, and she continues to be an inspiration to women everywhere as she serves as immediate-past President of the Women’s Sports Foundation. Married to the former Canadian women’s hockey player she once competed against, Gillian Apps, Ms. Duggan now has three children and lives in Toronto, Ontario.

Ray Ferraro – Trail Little League (British Columbia, Canada)

Ray Ferraro with Steve Keener receiving the Hall of Excellence Award

Growing up playing on the baseball fields in Trail, British Columbia, Ray Ferraro lived out a dream that every Little Leaguer hopes for – playing in the Little League Baseball World Series. Representing his hometown Trail Little League team, Mr. Ferraro and his teammates lived out the ultimate dream, winning the Canada Region championship to earn a trip to Williamsport in 1976.

Ray Ferraro Roster

Following his memorable Little League experience that saw a 1-2 record in the world’s largest youth sports tournament, Mr. Ferraro went on to an incredible career on the ice after being drafted 88th overall (fourth pick in the fifth round) in the 1982 NHL Draft by the Hartford Whalers. During his 18-year NHL career, Mr. Ferraro scored 408 goals and 490 assists for a total of 898 points across 1,258 games and was named an All-Star in 1992. During his 1993 season with the New York Islanders that ended with team-leading goals (13) and assists (20), Mr. Ferraro picked up a pair of overtime goals in the Stanley Cup Playoffs against the Washington Capitals and eventually went on to defeat the defending champion Pittsburgh Penguins before falling to the eventual champion Montreal Canadiens.

After hanging up his skates on August 2, 2002, he quickly turned his attention to the broadcast booth to share his love for the game with fans from all around the world. Since 2021, Mr. Ferraro has served on the ESPN broadcast team as an analyst and has previously served as a commentator for both the 2010 and 2018 Winter Olympics. On November 23, 2015, Mr. Ferraro became the first hockey broadcaster to call a game in which their child was playing, watching his son, Landon, take the ice with the Boston Bruins. Mr. Ferraro currently resides in Vancouver, British Columbia, with his wife, and Hockey Hall of Famer, Cammi Granato.

With their enshrinement, Ms. Duggan and Mr. Ferraro join a number of other incredible hockey players in the Little League Hall of Excellence:

  • Chris Drury – Class of 2009 (1989 LLBWS Participant)
  • Pierre Turgeon – Class of 2007 (1982 LLBWS Participant)
  • Krissy Wendell-Pohl – Class of 2004 (1994 LLBWS Participant)

In addition to those alumni in the Hall of Excellence, a handful of other professional hockey stars also shared in Mr. Ferraro’s dream of playing in the Little League Baseball World Series, including:

  • Stephane Matteau (1982 LLBWS)
  • Yanick Perrault (1983 LLBWS)
  • Harry Zolnierczyk (2000 LLBWS)

Maria Pepe

Maria Pepe Hero

Over the course of the past 50 years, there have been countless girls and women who have led in the movement to help bring opportunities to females within the Little League® program, but one young girl from Hoboken, New Jersey, truly was a pioneer in bringing a change the world would remember forever.

Born in 1960, Maria Pepe grew up like many girls continue to do today, loving the game of baseball. As a 12-year-old in 1972, she joined her friends and went out to pitch three games for her local Little League Baseball® team in Hoboken, New Jersey, enjoying the fun and teamwork that came with the Little League experience.

To honor her legacy, Little League International has officially enshrined her into the Hall of Excellence, the highest honor the organization can bestow, making her the eighth woman to earn the honor. The enshrinement ceremony took place on Saturday, June 8, during the welcome ceremony of the 2024 Maria Pepe Little League Baseball Legacy Series, the first-ever all-female baseball event held at Howard J. Lamade Stadium, named in Maria’s honor.

To learn more about these women as well as any of the other Little League® Hall of Excellence enshrinees, visit the Hall of Excellence at the Peter J. McGovern World of Little League® Museum in South Williamsport, Pa.

The World of Little League Museum® has been awarded a $4,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) as part of nearly $2 million in funding to 158 eligible museums across 58 Pennsylvania counties.

“We are honored to once again receive this generous grant from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission as we continue to find ways to enhance our Museum and bring fun, educational, and memorable experiences to all our guests that visit throughout the year,” said Adam Thompson, Director of the World of Little League Museum. “For decades, our Museum has brought the story of Little League to life in unique and interactive ways and has served as an important piece of history for not only Williamsport but the entire state of Pennsylvania. We are thankful to once again receive this funding and for the ongoing support of the PHMC and all of the other museums across the state.”

The goal of the Cultural and Historical Support Grant program is to strengthen Pennsylvania’s museum community by supporting the general operations of eligible museums and official county historical societies that are not supported by other state agency funding programs. The Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission is the official history agency of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Continuing to celebrate the wins and experiences of Little League® graduates, the World of Little League® Museum has officially opened two new exhibits: the Athletes Unlimited Pro Games Exhibit and the Tom Seaver Little League Legacy Exhibit.

The Athletes Unlimited Pro Games Exhibit

Highlighting the impact of the Athletes Unlimited (AU) and Little League partnership, this exhibit features multiple artifacts from the first-ever Athletes Unlimited Pro Games, played during the 2023 Little League Softball® World Series in Greenville, North Carolina.

The exhibit features tickets from the games, a softball that was used in the first game of the doubleheader, and Team Alexander’s dugout lineup card from the second game, signed by captain Odicci Alexander.

“Our goal is to update the museum frequently to highlight memorable events within the program. The Athletes Unlimited Pro Games held during this year’s Little League Softball World Series were undoubtedly special for the players and fans in Greenville,” said Adam Thompson, Director of the World of Little League Museum. “We are excited to showcase the artifacts from those games, continue highlighting our softball program, and ensure it is represented in our museum.”

Also in the case, in celebration of a former Little Leaguer now playing professionally with AU, the exhibit also features a signed Kathryn Sandercock jersey. A graduate of McLean (Va.) Little League, Ms. Sandercock played in the 2013 Little League Softball World Series (LLSWS) and continued her career playing at the collegiate level as a Florida State Seminole before being the fourth overall pick in the 2023 AU Softball College Draft. In the 2023 AU Pro Games, Ms. Sandercock played for Team Alexander and wore the purple jersey now showcased in the exhibit.

The Athletes Unlimited Pro Games Exhibit was added to the World of Little League Museum just in time for Little League’s launch of the “Girls with Game 50” Campaign, celebrating 50 years of female inclusion and the 50th anniversary of the first-ever Little League Softball World Series in 2024. The exhibit can be found between the Second and Third Innings of the Museum’s six-inning structure.

The Tom Seaver Little League Legacy Exhibit

The Tom Seaver Little League Legacy Exhibit

In 1988, Little League selected 12-time MLB All-Star Tom Seaver as the first inductee into the Little League Hall of Excellence, the greatest honor Little League can bestow. Now, 35 years later, Little League continues to honor the charter member with a new legacy exhibit.

Mr. Seaver was one of Major League Baseball’s most accomplished pitchers, earning him the nicknames of “Tom Terrific” and “The Franchise,” after he helped the New York Mets win their first World Series title in 1969. Highlighting this accomplishment, the exhibit features a patch sold by the Mets in 2021, with the proceeds going to the World of Little League Museum. The exhibit also displays a hat Mr. Seaver wore during his days on the fields of the Spartan Little League in Fresno, California.

Tom Seaver #41 Patch sold by the New York Mets in 2021

In 2021, due to the impacts of COVID-19, the Little League Baseball World Series featured only U.S. Teams. The 16 teams were split into two brackets, both named after Hall of Famers who embodied the mission of the Little League program during their careers, Hank Aaron and Mr. Seaver. Mr. Aaron passed away in January 2021 and Mr. Seaver passed in August 2020.

“Tom Seaver was a long-time friend and supporter of the museum. The exhibit will continue to honor his legacy and celebrate professional athletes who got their start on the Little League diamond.” said Mr. Thompson.

Like other exhibits in the museum, the new exhibit will also have an interactive feature. Guests will be able to operate a touch screen mounted onto the exhibit to learn more about notable athletes from all professional sports, including Patrick Mahomes, NFL quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, and Sydney Leroux, soccer player with Angel City FC and Olympic Gold Medalist for the U.S. Women’s National Team.

The exhibit was made possible through the generous support of the Seaver Family, New York Mets, and Baseball Hall of Fame members, Hank Aaron, Ted Simmons, Tony La Russa, Tom Glavine, Willie Mays, the Doug Harvey estate, and the chairman of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, Jane Forbes Clark.
