Welcome Little League International Board of Directors

During its annual fall meeting in November, four new Field Directors were elected to the Little League® International Board of Directors.

Joining as the newest Region Field Directors, as nominated by their fellow District Administrators (D.A.s) across their respective regions are Vojtěch Albrecht (Europe and Africa Region – Czechia), Urny Floran (Latin America Region – Curaçao District 1), Derek Lisby (Central Region – Indiana District 7), and Pam Stanley (Southwest Region – New Mexico District 9).

“The dedication and commitment of our volunteers are key to our organization’s success, and that support starts with the tremendous service and representation by the volunteer Field Directors on our International Board of Directors,” said Steven P. Johnson, Little League International Board of Directors Chairman. “On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, I am honored to welcome our newest members and would like to thank our departing board members for their service and commitment to the Board during their respective terms.”

As part of the election, these new members will replace the current field members whose terms have concluded – Tom Edge (Southwest), Serafin Gomez III (Latin America), Phil Rizzo (Central), and Kristian Palvia (Europe and Africa), who remains on the Board as an At-Large member.

2024 Umpires at the LLSWS

The application for umpires to request assignment at the 2025 Little League® International Tournament is officially open through the Umpire Registry, giving Little League umpires the opportunity to volunteer on the biggest stage next season.

APPLY NOW

Umpires interested in applying for one of these assignments must be a member of the Little League Umpire Registry and submit their Tournament Application on the registry home page. The deadline to apply for the 2025 assignments is December 31, 2024.

Little League International is hoping to complete the 2025 tournament assignment process by the end of January with individuals being notified in February.

HOW TO GET SELECTED

Beginning with the 2024 season, Little League International has adjusted its tournament selection process to allow umpires who have previously officiated Region and World Series Tournaments, and other upper-level tournaments, to apply to umpire these same level tournaments in future years. For example, umpires who have previously officiated at the Little League Baseball or Little League Softball World Series may apply for this experience again at any time in the future. This policy will continue to apply for 2025 tournament requests.

Also for 2025, umpires may indicate on their tournament application if they would like to be considered for region tournaments outside the region in which they reside.

Umpires interested in being considered for any World Series, Region, or other upper-level tournament assignment must be active umpires in their local leagues/districts and are encouraged to have recently attended any of Little League’s official education and training sessions available at a Region Center or Little League International in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

In addition to all the resources and events listed in the Umpire Registry, be sure to check out the Little League Event Calendar to stay up-to-date with all the events happening throughout the year.

Little League® International mourns the passing of Steven Lefler, 73, Assistant District Administrator for Arizona District 5.

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Mr. Lefler moved to Tucson, Arizona, where he spent his entire adult life with his wife, Linda, his two children, Heather and Brian, and eventually, his three grandchildren – Tyler, Andrew, and Madison. Mr. Lefler worked for several decades in the commercial construction business before his retirement.

A dedicated Little League volunteer for more than 40 years, Mr. Lefler most recently served as an Arizona District 5 A.D.A. for more than 30 of those years. In this position, Mr. Lefler played a key role in raising funds to help build new fields, acquire essential equipment for leagues, and provide additional resources to the District’s Challenger Division.

Mr. Lefler’s impact was felt in every event and tournament he volunteered for, including the Junior League Softball West Region Tournaments. Mr. Lefler was always the first one at the park, ensuring that the fields, equipment, and resources were ready for the umpires, district officers, volunteers coaches, and Little Leaguers®.

While on the complex, visitors are also encouraged to the World of Little League® Museum to check out the exciting new Girls with Game exhibit.

While this event will mark the Official Grand Opening, the new Flagship Store first opened its doors this summer during the 2024 Little League Baseball® World Series, Presented by T-Mobile. Originally developed as part of the World Series expansion plans to provide a better experience for fans with the official merchandise to support all 20 teams participating, the new 6,000-square-foot Flagship Store includes increased retail space, enhanced customer flow, as well as areas for staff offices and warehousing for stock and e-commerce operations.

Additionally, the store provides both World Series fans and year-long visitors with a one-stop shopping experience at a convenient location across from Volunteer Stadium and closer to the main entrance during the World Series. From apparel and caps to show off their region support to memorabilia and pins to remember the experience for generations, the Little League Flagship Store is a go-to for families from all around the world.

The launch of the store also coincides with Little League’s expanded agreement with Delaware North Sportservice to lend expertise and management oversight to its new retail flagship store and operations relationship. As a non-profit organization, Little League International’s retail operations, both on the complex and at ShopLittleLeague.org, further helps to support the organization’s purpose of positively impacting youth and communities by providing necessary resources, league essentials, and additional revenue necessary that directly benefit leagues throughout the year. This relationship, and the new Flagship Store, will continue to provide memorable experiences for fans from around the globe while also supporting the strategic initiatives of the organization.

Azalea Park Little League Brings Community Together with Mural Honoring Roberto Clemente

(Published on September 13, 2024 on LittleLeague.org)

A native of Puerto Rico, Roberto Clemente spent 18 seasons for the Pittsburgh Pirates where he was named a 15-time All-Star and earned two World Series championship titles. More than just an outstanding baseball player, who would go on to become the first player from the Caribbean and Latin America to be named to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, Mr. Clemente was also heavily focused on supporting communities in need.

Unfortunately, in December 1972, Roberto Clemente tragically died in a plane crash while taking emergency relief goods to earthquake survivors in Nicaragua, but today his inspiring story can be felt in communities all around the world – including Azalea Park Little League in Orlando, Florida.

In 2014, a mural honoring Clemente was vandalized at the local league’s park, devastating the Little Leaguers® and their community. However, the loss of the mural did not last for long and the meaning behind it stood stronger than ever before.

“It takes courage to grow up and turn out to be who you really are.”  ~ E.E. Cummings

Dear Girls with Game,

It is an honor to share my story and reflect back on what has brought me joy and success in this Girls with Game series. Growing up, I was surrounded by family with women strong in their convictions and driven to leave a positive impact in their careers and communities. And, they did just that – as Math, English, Spelling, and Reading Teachers; community leaders; leaders in banking; and championing military auxiliaries. I guess I can say that I was destined to have a career serving others. But, before I share that part, let’s focus on the young Mireille.

I had the fortune of living in a small community with parents who were teachers, which allowed my brother and me to participate in a lot of different activities each summer. That is where I found fun and friendships playing slow-pitch softball on the green t-shirt team (very original). And, when not playing softball, I was at my brother’s baseball games helping my mom in the concession stand or keeping stats in the dugout. Through these activities, along with swimming and learning life skills as a Brownie and Girl Scout, I learned how to be a good teammate, grow a competitive spirit, listen to and learn from others, give back, and have fun in the moment.

These friendships continued into middle and high school with field hockey, fast-pitch softball, student government, music, service to the local hospital as a candy striper, and eventually my first job at Hersheypark. Again, I grew and learned that no one person is greater than the team, to always stay true to myself, and appreciate all that I have experienced.

Fast forward to the early 90s when I started my career with Marriott International – a company and industry that is all about service to others. Over my 30-year career, I had incredible mentors, leaders, and peers who were inspiring, authentic, humble, and always focused on taking great care of the associates. Their guidance and belief in my abilities gave me the opportunity to cross-fit my career through a number of different work experiences and roles. Through this three-decade journey, I got to meet people from all cultures and backgrounds and developed lifelong friendships.

When the coronavirus pandemic hit the United States, the hospitality industry was severely impacted and I made the difficult decision, took a risk, and said goodbye to an organization that allowed me to be me for 30 years. I truly believe that this turn of events, and my experiences, led me to this opportunity with Little League – an organization that resonates with my values and passions of giving back. Now, I have begun to write the next chapter with a small and mighty team vested in positively impacting youth and communities.

So, as Little League begins to close out 50 years of Girls with Game, here is my advice to all Girls with Game who will charge forward into the next 50 years:

  • Be fierce, determined, tenacious, curious, authentic, and always true to you!
  • Never stop learning, growing, and having FUN!
  • Develop others and own your professional and personal development – no excuses!
  • Don’t be afraid to change, pivot, and experience new opportunities!
  • Stay humble!
  • Be BOLD, Be YOU, Be UNSTOPPABLE!

Your legacy will be the small footprints you leave on the hearts and minds of those you positively impact – seize the moments and appreciate always.

“Susan’s positive customer service and goal-oriented work ethic has continued to help the retail team grow and adapt, especially with the transition to our new Flagship store,” said Christa DeAngelo, Little League Retail General Manager. “We are excited to see how she will continue to enhance our operations while positively impacting the experience for those who interact with our retail operations throughout the year, and especially each August as we welcome families from all around the world.”

Ms. Rivers joined the Little League team in 2022 as the Retail Customer Service Representative after more than two decades of customer service experience. In addition to her professional experience, Ms. Rivers has also been a part of two local fundraising teams, the first to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network and the second as co-captain of a Relay for Life team in Mill Hall, Pennsylvania.

“I’m looking forward to taking on new challenges and implementing new ideas that come with my role as the Retail Inventory and Warehouse Specialist,” said Ms. Rivers. “I am excited to continue my career path with Little League, working with a great retail operations team and providing attentive customer service to those who interact with retail operations.”

In her new role, Ms. Rivers will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of inventory and warehouse operations.
